Is Your Golf Cart Safe for Night Driving?

Your golf cart may be street legal, but is it safe to drive in the dark? Most golf cart owners struggle to answer that question because they’re not sure what safety equipment they need. To help golf cart drivers avoid crashes while driving at night, we’ve put together this guide for driving your golf cart safely at night.

If you plan to take your golf cart home after an evening out, you should have these three safety measures.

Turn Signals

If you’re driving on a public street, you need turn signals. While some new carts come with electronic turn signals already installed, many do not. That means you either need to install your own turn signal kit or you need to learn hand signals.

To indicate a left turn, put your arm out horizontally. To indicate a right turn, put your left arm up at a 90-degree angle. If you’re concerned about visibility, you might want to invest in reflective gloves.

Headlights and Brake Lights

Before heading into the night, take a moment to check that your headlights and brake lights are in working order. Both come standard on most golf carts these days. If your cart doesn’t have headlights and brake lights, you should get a kit or take it into the shop.

While streetlamps certainly help with visibility, headlights assist in identifying pedestrians and cyclists. Similarly, brake lights tell traditional drivers to slow down, which can be critical in situations where a golf cart is tailed by a much faster vehicle.

Reflective Material

Take a moment to ensure your golf cart has some reflective material on it. This will help other drivers, especially car drivers, identify you at range. To ensure maximum visibility, you should have at least one strip of reflective material on each side of your golf cart.

If you or someone you love suffered severe injuries in a golf cart accident, you might have a case.
